Sérgio Camargo: Light and Matter

Itaú Cultural, Avenida Paulista, 149, Bela Vista

Itaú Cultural presents the exhibition “Sergio Camargo: Luz e Matéria” (“Sergio Camargo: Light and Matter“), curated by Paulo Sergio Duarte and Cauê Alves. The exhibition is dedicated to one of the most important names in Brazilian visual arts of the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition occupies three floors of the institute and includes more than 100 works by the sculptor, objects from his studio, letters, videos and photographs.

After making figurative sculptures, Sergio Camargo in the 1960 created the first series of reliefs, mainly using wooden rollers. Ten years later, his production was consolidated with the works in marble, material with which he would be working throughout of his career.

Sergio Camargo (1930-1990) was born in Rio de Janeiro and studied and worked in Europe. In Paris he had contacts with several well-known artists, but it was the visits to Romanian Constantin Brancusi‘s studio (1876-1957) that gave him one of the most decisive experiences, which would influence his future creations.

Apart from Brazil, the artist worked in different places, like France and Italy. Given the importance to the space in creative process, a part of the exhibition is the artist’s recreated the last studio in Jacarepagua, Rio de Janeiro.
