Tomie Ohtake: Orbis Tertius

In 2014, with the opening of a permanent room dedicated only for exhibitions of works of the artist Tomie Ohtake, patron of the Institute, a space was created where the public can have access to works from all periods of her vast production. From this, arose the possibility of translating the continuous research about the artists in more compact exhibitions, that address specific aspects of the works, relating to other areas of knowledge.

Tomie Ohtake – Orbis Tertius is an example of this will to look at all of her production under new perspectives. It is an attempt to unite formal description and poetic interpretation to other layers of interpretation of a work, this time borrowing resources from literature. For such experience, seven works were chosen from distinct periods of Tomie Ohtake, all predominantly with circular movements and consequently, curved shapes. If all of Tomie Ohtake’s works are alone a pleasure to look at, here they are also presented with the tortuous challenge of description and interpretation.
