Waltercio Caldas: Ateliê Transparente

Instituto de Arte Contemporânea (IAC), Rua Doutor Álvaro Alvim, 90, Vila Mariana

If the many layers in Waltercio Caldas’ (b. 1946, Rio de Janeiro) production already compel the spectator to reflection, one can imagine how instigating it must be a solo exhibition by the artist, organized by the artist himself, in a space dedicated to reveal the creation process of contemporary artists, the Instituto de Arte Contemporânea (IAC).

For his solo show at the Institute, Ateliê Transparente [Transparent Studio], and to display how he conceives his artistic process, Waltercio thought of the exhibition as a great piece, in which he suggests the relations he establishes in the form he exhibits the information. The series of information gathered in the show – including the indications present in a few notebooks – point to how an idea can become an object, a drawing or a sculpture. Other than the notebooks, the show comprises small objects, mock-ups, drawings, future drawings, sculpture projects and objects that the artist calls “transitive”, in the process of becoming.
