The second edition of Bawwaba, “getaway” in Arabic, returns in 2020 with the curatorship of Bombay-based Nancy Adajania. Within the sector, a series of solo presentations by ten artists from Peru, India, Vietnam, Mexico, among others, deliver different perspectives and highlight the strong cultural interconnections of the contemporary art scenario. The section – as its titled states – is an invitation to explore the liminal zones of global contemporary art, challenging the conventional barriers between western and non-western art.
This year, one artist from the section will be conferred the new Art Dubai’s Bawwaba Commission Award, initiated by Art Dubai in partnership with Mohammad and Mahera Abu Ghazaleh Foundation for Arts and Culture (MMAG Foundation) in Amman, Jordan. The winning artist will receive a commission to produce a new work that will then be exhibited at the MMAG Foundation in 2021. He or she will also win a residency at the Foundation and public programming around the Commission. An international jury will assign the prize.
