Living Rocks: A Fragment of the Universe
Promoter: Art Gallery of South Australia
The South Australian collaboration “Living Rocks: A Fragment of the Universe” is the only Australian collateral project selected at Biennale Arte 2019. The presentation by James Darling and Lesley Forwood merges sculpture, moving image and sound in the setting of the Magazzini del Sale, historical stone salt storehouses in Venice. The two recreates a pool from which some thrombolites surface. These rock-like structures, crafted by the artists, were the only living beings on earth for three billion years and created the beginnings of the atmosphere of our planet. Referencing Rugoff’s theme “May You Live In Interesting Times”, the installation addresses the core question of the fragility of our planet through recalling the origins of life on earth.
