Conference: Art Institutions In The Age Of Post-Publicness

Via G.B. Piranesi 10, Milan, Italy

On the occasion of the exhibition The Unarchivable. Italia Anni 70 FM Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea presents a conference Art Institutions In The Age Of Post-Publicness.

It is second cycle of the series of events related to the exhibition The Inarchiviabile/The Unarchivable. Italy 70 Years, curated by Marco Scotini. After the success of the presentation of the book by Tommaso Trini Mezzo Secolo di arte intera. FM Center for Contemporary Art, in collaboration with the Master in Contemporary Art Markets NABA will host the talk of Vasif Kortun, curator and director of SALT Research & Programs, one of the most important institutions of contemporary art in Istanbul, Turkey; the conference will be on the situation of contemporary art institutions in an era of crisis in the dimension of public culture.

Vasif Kortun in his lecture will speak about the museums’ landscape that has developed from a network of relations that exclude the public dimension. It has become, one might say, a “pre-public space” and “post-public” with some inclinations; museum now offers things for popular consumption as a kind of surplus. The results remain similar. Exhibitions and public programs appear to be more or less the same. However, the processes through which decisions are made have been privatized in a global network according to private or group interests that are self-affirming. Other feature of the museums has become the public and educational incarnation that was structurally subsidized and that targets a local and international tourist class.

This results in a form of impotent socialization. It refers to the inflows of visitors and their shared experience, according single model, and for the purpose of inclusiveness, their desires become assimilated. The conference will discuss the possible ways out of this impasse.

The event will take a place May 5, 2016, 18.30 pm.
