Il Novecento. L’arte contro

Peggy Guggenheim Collection

Guggenheim Art Classes 2015
Conducted by Alessandra Montalbetti, Superintendency of the Brera, Milan

Nel 1882 Eduard Manet, father of the Impressionism, wrote: “Be prepared: in the next century art will no longer be a cup of warm soup to be sipped in an armchair by the fireplace.” With these words Manet intuitively predicted the radical avant-garde innovations of the first half of the 20th century which, though defined as ‘short’ by historians, has irrevocably changed both the conventions of painted imagery and its relationship to its audience. Lectures will examine some of the major art movements, identifying unexpected links to contemporary literature.
