Alberto Lezaca: According to the matter

Alejandra Von Hartz Gallery presents the exhibition “Alberto Lezaca: According to the matter”. This is the Colombian artist’s, Bogota based, first exhibition at the gallery.

The exhibition presents a series of digital photographs, paintings and videos. The featured pieces take as reference documentary pictures related to artists that have special relevance in Lezaca’ s practice and evolution. Ad Reinhardt in his studio (1962), Marcel Duchamp’s studio in Paris (1927), Kazimir Malevich’s funeral (1935), and Apollo Pavilion designed by the British artist Victor Pasmore (1958), are some of the archives used by Lezaca.

Through a digital modelling process, Lezaca rebuilds these pictures and sets up new images. Lezaca states, “I understand this process as a mental exercise of historical reconstruction, I am seeking to reveal the “real image” behind these historical archives”. Lezaca’ s work investigates the relationships between electronic image and materiality, interrogating the interface between virtually and physical material substance.

During his career, Lezaca has worked in a variety of media, including installation, video, sculpture, CG graphics, and painting. His work has been influenced by a strong interest in the concept of “prototype”, understood as a primal idea that shapes the objects and devices that surround us. Lezaca is also interested in language as a cultural construction; mainly in terms of how language determines the way we understand the material world by creating categories and mental structures.
