Alexandre Arrechea: Corners

Galeria Nara Roesler New York, 22 East 69th Street 3R

The exhibition “Corners” gathers new works by Alexandre Arrechea, which continue the artist’s eponymous ongoing project of photo collages. In these pieces on board, paper and tapestry, Arrechea overlaps several images representing different buildings’ facades of Havana, creating compositions which refer to faces and tribal masks. Arrechea creates new orders and hierarchies through the juxtaposition of pictures of unknown corners of the city with the ones of historical landmarks of the urban architecture. The artist often uses symbols and material manipulating them and creating visual metaphors for social themes of inequality, cultural disenfranchisement, and the disputed position of art in a global, media-driven society.
