Dóra Maurer

Tate Modern

05 Aug 201905 Jul 2020

Hungarian artist Dóra Maurer is at the centre of the comprehensive solo exhibition at Tate Modern, opening on August 5, 2019. The solo show collects around 35 works selected from Tate’s collection or loaned by private institutions which span more than five decades of the artist’s career. The pieces range from her first experimental ones to the more recent paintings, joint by her conceptual playful approach to all media.

The show highlights the variety of Maurer’s practice, who trained as graphic artist but soon begun to work with photography and moving image, collaborating at the same time with many musicians. In the 1970s she begun to experiment with drawing and painting, producing abstract compositions in which colours and geometric shapes overlap. Although always shifting from a medium to another, Maurier’s pieces are all linked by the common threads of movement, displacement and transformation.
