Ed Fornieles

The work of Ed Fornieles employs the vast amounts of available personal and public data that feeds our insatiable attention economy.

For “Die Geist: Flesh Feast,” his first solo exhibition in the gallery, Fornieles transforms the space into an environment reminiscent of a “Diet Bar” or “Health Food Bar.”
In this installation, which combines sculptures, animation, banners, films, and material from the artist’s web-based projects, Fornieles explores and re-enacts contemporary and quasi-messianic notions of self-management, bio-hacking, and the idea of rephrasing the body as a system that can utterly be controlled.
Fornieles states: “In the diet I am at the center, dreams of betterment and progress become biological, I am able to internalize ideas such as the American dream or Western enlightenment. I am becoming equipped with weapons such as smart drugs, micro-dosing, therapy, and personal training. I am becoming aware that these tools are unevenly accessible to people in different economic and political demographics…[ultimately] the cost of your self-management reduces the possibility of self determination for others.”
