Gutai

de Sarthe Gallery, 20/F Global Trade Square, 21 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong

The Gutai movement was made up of 59 artists, with 17 from the first generation, which took place in the 1960s. The second generation was active in the 1970s. Artists that will be included in the exhibition include Shozo Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, and Jiro Yoshihara.

The exhibition, entitled “gutai”, analyses the relationship the artwork has with a given material, how that relationship is portrayed across the work, and how that impacts the viewer. Many of the pieces from the second generation have “recurrent patterns, mindful proportions and simplicity of form.” The exhibition will honor the Gutai movement, an art form which was long forgotten, and the impact it has had on the art world.
