Informal painting and sculptures by Paul Suter

Galerie Carzaniga Basel, Gemsberg 10, Basel, Switzerland

The gallery presents a double exhibition, including various works by Swiss artists such as Mark Tobey, Rolf Iseli, Marcel Schaffner, Lenz Klotz, as well as sculptures by Paul Suter.

The exhibition Informal painting presents Swiss artists who were fascinated by the young generation of American painters in the 1940s and early 50s, such as Pollock, Rothko and Kline. Their works presented a certain liberation from the European history and culture, which was an increasingly heavy burden to carry. Further, the Swiss artists were inspired by the different formats and dimensions these American Artists used, and were challenged to as well try to fill a large empty canvas. Thereby, the focus shifted away from the central object of a work to the bare artistic practice of painting itself. This show presents a collection of works by artists such as Lenz Klotz, Hans R. Schiess, Wilfrid Moser, Emil Schumacher, Samuel Buri, Marcel Schaffner, and many more, who all present various elements of American painting of the 40s and 50s.

The second exhibition presents sculptural works by Paul Suter, whose favorite material to work with was oxidizing steel which he formed to cubist forms. Challenging the material, his works seem to constantly be in movement. The artist’s focal point of many works was the dynamics, of the work itself and of the piece within its exhibition rooms.
