Italy Inside Out

Palazzo della Ragione Fotografia

21 Mar 201527 Sep 2015

From March 21st to September 27th, 2015, Palazzo della Ragione Fotografia in Milan hosts Italy Inside Out, the biggest photo exhibition ever made, entirely dedicated to Italy.
The exhibition, conceived as a single initiative, splits into two moments: from March 21st to June 21st dedicated to Italian photographers; and from July 1st to September 27th dedicated to international photographers. The whole project delivers to the audience a glimpse into the most represented country of the world through 600 images of the most important Italian and international authors.

The exhibition, promoted and produced by the City of Milan, Palazzo della Ragione, Civita, Contrasto and GAmm Giunti, organized by Giovanna Calvenzi and designed by Peter Bottazzi, after the single exhibitions dedicated to Sebastião Salgado and Walter Bonatti, carries on the schedule Palazzo della Ragione, at the new exhibition space fully dedicated to photography in Piazza dei Mercanti, a few steps from Duomo, opened in June 2014.

The exhibition is part of Expo in the city, the program of initiatives that will guide the cultural life of the city during the first half of the Universal Exhibition.

Italy Inside Out recalls Italian history through the watchful eye of the most significant artists of the XIX century. Henri Cartier-Bresson or Herbert List, in the thirties, and later Robert Capa and David Seymour, who recorded the Second World War and the postwar period, and the Italian authors who followed the transformation of Italy from the fifties to the present day.
For the first time, Italy Inside Out shows the work of great masters who, at different times and through personal experiences, grasped the main features and the distinctive peculiarities of “Bel Paese” and its people. Their research focused on the beauty of landscapes, the development of cities, the stereotypes, the way of life, but even of hopes, dreams and dramas of our recent history. A time travel in places and events, whose mixture creates the plot for a careful consideration about what Italy and Italian people currently are and have been.
The suggestion of the journey will also be recreated by the unique set designed by Peter Bottazzi who, for this special occasion, created a long convoy of cars, housing inside each one of them a single exhibition of every artists’ work about his or her most inspiring places in Italy.
The first part – Inside – welcomes from March 21st to June 21st, 2015 a selection of over 250 images by more than forty photographers; from Gianni Berengo Gardin to Massimo Vitali; from Gabriele Basilico to Mario Giacomelli; from Luigi Ghirri to Mimmo Jodice; from Letizia Battaglia to Silvia Camporesi, with works witnessing the evolution of contemporary photographic Italian language and, at the same time, representing an act of love for their country, its landscapes, its cities, its people.
With the second part – Out – from July 1st to September 27th, 2015, Italian authors will give way to international artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour, Alexei Titarenko, Bernard Plossu, Isabel Muñoz, John Davies and others.
