James Ensor and Alexander Kluge: Dark Centuries

Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles, 35 ter rue du Docteur Fanton

Belgian artist James Ensor and German film-maker, media theoretician and writer Alexander Kluge dialogue in an unprecedented selection of works by both the artists, in the context of the exhibition “James Ensor and Alexander Kluge: Dark Centuries“. More than 30 prints by Ensor represent a various and grotesque humanity, captured in crowded scenes and exaggerate expressions. On the other hand, the 11 films by Kluge on view in the exhibition express the film-maker’s critic to the entertainment industry, trying to convey contents related with music and literature, without bending them to the television standards. Both the artists produce a body of grotesque works, as a consequence of their defiance against the mass society and the great changes of their centuries.
