Jean Dubuffet and Venice

Curated by Sophie Webel and Frédéric Jaeger, Palazzo Franchetti presents the exhibition highlighting the strong relationship between French artist Jean Dubuffet and city of Venice with the artist’s three most important series: from the Célébration du sol to Hourloupe and then Mires. Dubuffet chose Venice twice to debut his back then new works: 1964 at Palazzo Grassi and 1984 at the French Pavilion, which marked the artist’s career path.

Jean Dubuffet was a French painter and sculptor, known for his rebellious attitude toward prevailing notions of high culture and beauty. His idealistic approach to aesthetics embraced so called “low art” and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making.
