Bringing together a selection of luscious oil paintings on canvas, hand-painted ceramic pots and vessels displayed on bespoke wooden stools, and a small wooden house adorned with exuberant scenery in black paint that contrasts with the wood’s natural grain, knots and swirls, OMR presents British artist Jessie Makinson’s first major solo exhibition, Tender Trick.
Inspired by the 17th Century travel fiction The Blazing World by Margaret Cavendish; Tender Trick is an adventure, a romance and fanciful autobiography with an unreliable narrator. What is different from The Blazing World, here is a courtly utopia without hierarchies. References to speculative fiction and the occult reveal the world as story and the nature of reality as narrative.
