Jonathan Monk: Two Dozen Eggs and a Thumbprint after pm

Loom Gallery presents ‘Two Dozen Eggs and a Thumbprint after pm’ a solo show by Jonathan Monk.

For this exhibition Jonathan Monk presents two dozen receipts on which he has emblazoned his well-known egg motif superimposed by Piero Manzoni’s fingerprint, eliciting an art that devours, that pays the bill for a dinner, or a good drink at Bar Jamaica.

The British artist has stated that ‘Appropriation is something I have used or worked with in my art since starting art school in 1987. At this time (and still now) I realised that being original was almost impossible, so I tried using what was already available as source material for my own work.’

He explores and dissects the creative process and the tendency of contemporary art to appropriate and imitate whilst simultaneously paying homage to the great artists of our time, simply giving the original idea a new lease of life.
