Judith Linhares: Hearts on Fire

P.P.O.W., 535 West 22nd Street, 3rd Floor

The exhibition “Hearts on Fire” celebrates the four-decade career of Judith Linhares, whose practice combines features of abstract expressionism with California Bay Area figuration, typical of the Counter Culture of the 60s and 70s. Her vivid paintings present abstract fields of colour from which her subjects gradually emerge. The title of the exhibition references the commercial name of a particular cut of diamonds and describes the world represented by the artist, where men are removed from the pictorial landscape. On the other hand, a central role is taken by mythological women communing with nature alongside colorful portraits of farm animals and floral still lives. Linhares draws wide inspiration for her subjects from her dreams, exploring the the relationship between the conscious and unconscious spheres.
