South African artist Lisa Brice is showcasing new paintings and works on paper at Stephen Friedman Gallery. The show follows her recent solo presentation at Tate Britain, London (2018).
The London-based artist continues her interrogation of the male gaze by contesting and reinterpreting traditional depictions of women throughout art history. In her paintings, the artist uses rich hues of vermillion and cobalt blue, depicting images of female empowerment and defiance such as women wielding paintbrushes and cigarettes populate Brice’s recent work.
