Mark Müller Gallery presents Michael Toenge’s “Malerei [Painting]”: What and why is painting? When is a painting finished? Or in the artist’s own words: “When is it just a pile of fucking paint and when does it become more?”. It is therefore not surprising that Toenges’ work depicts the act of painting itself, with the traces of manual work always visible and comprehensible: three dimensional surface changes with light and shadow, becomes alive and shapes landscapes with mountains and valleys.
