Millôr: Graphic Work

Millôr: graphic work brings together 500 original works of an artist difficult to classify. Humorist, playwright and journalist, Millôr becomes a reference for several generations.

The exhibition is on display from April 16 until 21 August 2016 at the Moreira Salles Institute of Rio de Janeiro. It is the first retrospective dedicated to the drawings of the humorist, playwright and translator. The curators Cássio Loredano, Julia Kovensky and Paulo Roberto Pires map the main themes that were present throughout the 70 years of the artist’s production. These drawings, mostly made to be published in the press, reveal the strength and complexity of a fundamental work for Brazilian art. Accompanies the exhibition a book that in addition to reproduce the original drawings, brings together critical essays and a chronology of the life and work of Millôr.

The exhibition divides into five major sets the graphic work of Millôr, from the self-portraits to the relentless criticism of Brazilian life, through the human relations, the pleasure of drawing and the immense and important production of “Pif-Paf” section that he kept in the magazine “O Cruzeiro” between 1945 and 1963. the Millôr’s collection, which includes more than six thousand drawings and his personal archive, is under the custody of the Instituto Moreira Salles since 2013.

Born in Rio de Janeiro Millôr Fernandes is characterized by a unique style and an unmistakable, acid humor. He defined himself as a journalist but for readers and admirers, who accompanied him throughout more than 70-year of his career, the definition seems insufficient.
