Mona Hatoum: Remains to Be Seen

White Cube Bermondsey presents “Remains to Be Seen”, Mona Hatoum‘s first exhibit in London since the Tate Modern presentation in 2016. The show presents new installation, sculpture and works on paper by the Palestinian-British installation and video artist where heavy, industrial building materials are transformed into a light, suspended cube. Hatoum’s practice tackles subjects originating from our current global condition: systems of confinement, the architecture of surveillance, mobility and conflict. Through a wide range of materials from steel, brick and concrete, to rubble, glass and human hair, she explores the elemental forms of the grid and the sphere, drawing on both the geometric rigour of Minimalist sculpture and the possibilities for its formal collapse.

In September 2019, Hatoum has been honoured with the 2019 Praemium Imperiale Awards by the Japan Art Association. This year, the list of recipients includes William Kentridge, Mona Hatoum, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Bando Tamasaburo. The award celebrates significant achievements in the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theatre/film.
