Parallel Shows: Cildo Meireles, Marta Neves, Peter Fischli & David Weiss

From October 8th to November 15th, in parallel to the exhibition Barrão: Fora Daqu, Casa França-Brasil presents three shows curated by the institution’s director Pablo León de la Barra.

The house’s vault will be occupied by the piece “Camelô” (1998), by  Cildo Meireles (b. 1948, Rio de Janeiro), a small installation where a figurine of about 40 cm height move its arms, as if offering the products displayed on top of two tables: one thousand pins and one thousand plastic busks.

On the façade, Marta Neves (b. 1964, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) displays a banner with the following sentence “In October, 98, Adriano planned to pass the millennium New Year’s Eve in New York. When the occasion arrived, there was a violent rise in value of the dollar, and, as he had no better idea, Adriano went to Contagem/MG”. The work derives from her “Não-ideias” [Non ideas] research, which the artist has started in 2001 and has already occupied several spaces, such as the 31st Bienal de São Paulo, in 2014.

On the lateral room of the building, there are loop exhibitions of “The Way Things Go” (1987, 29’45”), by duo Peter Fischli (b. 1952, Zurich) & David Weiss (1946 –2012, Switzerland). The film documents a chain reaction over a precarious structure of 35 meters long, built with quotidian objects, like an improbable Rube Goldberg’s machine, the cartoonist/inventor that projected complex mechanisms to achieve simple goals.
