Photography Modernities, 1940-1964

The Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS-RJ) is hosting the exhibition “Photography Modernities, 1940-1964″ (Modernidades fotográficas, 1940-1964 ). Curated by Ludger Derenthal and Samuel Titan Jr, the exhibition features more than 160 images taken by four major Brazilian photographers during a time of rapid transformation and a modernization period for the country.

Before heading to Rio, the exhibition was held in Berlin, Lisbon, Paris and Madrid. Works included in the exhibition were taken by photojournalist José Medeiros, abstractionist Thomaz Farkas, industrial photographer Hans Gunter Flieg, and modernist Marcel Gautherot.

The images range from scenes of everyday life to modern architecture and the industrialization of parts of the country to the impact of modernity on some of Brazil’s indigenous peoples to cultural practices and religious observances during the time period in the country.
