The Cubist Cosmos: From Picasso to Léger

Kunstmuseum Basel, St. Alban-Graben 16, 4051 Basel, Switzerland

Produced together with the Centre Pompidou, the exhibition collects around 130 works from both this museum and the Kunstmuseum Basel‘s collections, besides pieces on loan from international institutions. The exhibition path surveys the evolution of the Cubist movement from 1908 to the period after the World War I, highlighting its complexity and the variety of its stylistic declinations. It also offers an overview of the wider context in which the artworks entered the Kunstmuseum Basel’s collection.

“The Cubist Cosmos. From Picasso to Léger” explores the different phases of the movement, widening its scope to highlight Cubism’s ties with contemporary intellectuals, through the inclusion of portraits of critics and writers including Gertrude Stein, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, among the others.
