Ximena Garrido-Lecca: Estados Nativos

Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, Av. Figueroa Alcorta 3415

The first solo show by Ximena Garrido-Lecca (Lima, 1980) in Buenos Aires, “Native States” describes the return of industrialized copper to its origin as natural copper. The Peruvian artist places in the room a reel of electrical cable from which the copper threads were extracted. These wires were, in turn, melted, resulting in liquid copper. Through the technique of lost wax, the liquid formed the pieces that can be seen in the glass windows in the third room.
In several of her works, the techniques and traditions from the Andean civilization are confronted with industrial processes and materials and stress different cultural temporalities in the same space. Based on the sculpture, Garrido-Lecca thematizes mining, the survival of ancestral forms of life and the modifications to which progress compels them. Her work combines a strong interest in the repertoire of techniques and popular images with quotations of the minimalist North American poetic.
