Iceland Pavilion officially shut down

As of Friday the 22nd of May the Iceland Pavilion at the Venice Biennale has officially been closed to the public.

“The police came after 11 this morning and requested that we close it, my site manager told me that they deposited a three- or four-page document saying that there were violations and that it’s not approved for occupation anymore.” Christoph Büchel

Local authorities have declared that the mosque recreated by artist Christoph Büchel was done without the right permits by the city council and other local institution and it violates Italian by allowing visitor to actually worship inside the mosque.

The artists intentions was to highlight the fact that there’s isn’t any mosque yet in Venice, despite the strong influence of Arab and Islamic art in the city’s history and architecture.
