Penumbra
"In Between Art Film" presents "Penumbra", 8 video installations to transform the Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti in Venice.
During the 59th Venice Biennale, Fondazione In Between Art Film presents “Penumbra”: a series of new video installations inserted in the suggestive late medieval surrounding of Ospedaletto and Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti. Inspired by the mystical aura of Venice, the exhibition turns the church’s architecture into a cinematic machine. The moving images take over the church, building a bridge between distant times, in a simultaneous new dimension that combines ancient spaces and time-based media.
The title “Penumbra” refers to a state of partial illumination which is taken as the starting point to reflect on “penumbral states“. Those states are intended as the grayscale that occurs between dichotomies such as vulnerability and immunity, truth and fiction, and visibility and opacity.
The exhibition features artworks by international artists Karimah Ashadu, Jonathas de Andrade, Aziz Hazara, He Xiangyu, Masbedo, James Richards, Emilija Škarnulytė, and Ana Vaz.
