59th Biennale Arte – Special Projects
The Special Projects at the 59th Biennale Arte feature artists Sophia Al-Maria and Elisa Giardina Papa.
Pavilion of Applied Arts Special Project, Arsenale, Sale d’Armi: “Tiger Strike Red”
Qatari-American artist, writer, and filmmaker Sophia Al-Maria explore the echoes of colonialism and racism as they have bled into the contemporary relationship between humans via the inherent biases of our algorithms and machines. Al-Maria’s work raises questions around the alienation and dysfunction arising from a culture of “alternative facts” and whitewashed history, identifying remnants of colonialism in the fields of quantum computing, virtual space, and artificial intelligence.
Forte Marghera Special Project, Mestre
Elisa Giardina Papa, one of the artists taking part in the International has been invited by Cecilia Alemani to make a special work in Forte Marghera, in the building called Polveriera austriaca.
