Castello Romitorio

Formerly a castle, Castello Romitorio is now an art winery

Loc. Romitorio 279, Montalcino, Siena

Castello Romitorio welcomes visitors and small groups by appointment to attend wine tastings experiences and guided tours to the cellar-laboratory,
where daily work on wine coexists with the art of Sandro Chia.

Castello Romitorio was acquired by artist Sandro Chia in 1984, when the castle became his residence and artist-studio. Together with the property, Chia acquired the wineries too, aiming to reanimate the soul of this space and starting a new business in the art and wine field, specializing in the production of Sangiovese e del Brunello di Montalcino. In 2005 the winery was inaugurated and the residency is decorated with artworks by Sandro.

Castello Romitorio is the home, studio and winery of the artist Sandro Chia (Florence, 1946), founded in the early 1980s. Through the visit path, which is completed in the wine tasting in the cellar, the artist’s works are closely connected with the landscape and with the company’s vocation: “I never wanted a country-house, but a simple place to work and live. I am like a workshop and I need my tools: I tackle the subject of wine like that of a painting.”
