Santa Maria della Scala

Piazza Duomo 1, Siena, Italy

Set in the heart of Siena, Santa Maria della Scala was originally built around 1090 as an hospital and shelter for pilgrims, poor people and abandoned children. The building today welcomes a museum and a cultural institution, and displays numerous traits of its historical record, with monumental doors, narrow corridors, obscure crypts and coloured frescoes ranging from Etruscan and Roman times, through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
