Liwan Design Studios and Labs
Located in a historic mid-century building in downtown Msheireb, Liwan Design Studios and Labs provides a dedicated space for Qatar’s growing creative community. The centre is housed in one of Doha’s notable 1950s architectural landmarks, named after the central courtyard that defines the building’s design.
Originally constructed as the country’s first girls’ school, Banat Al-Doha, later renamed Um Almo’mneen, the building served the local community for more than five decades before closing in 2005. In 2019, it was restored and repurposed as a creative hub under the supervision of Qatar Museums, with key architectural features preserved.
Liwan’s mission centres on supporting contemporary creative practice while conserving an important site in Qatar’s architectural, social, and educational history.
