Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain

Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain is a space for artistic dialogue and experimentation, placing contemporary art in all its forms at the heart of its institutional mission.

2 Place du Palais-Royal, 75001

Since its creation in 1984, Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has fostered the intersection and breaking down of artistic boundaries. Its activities and commitments in France and abroad with the ambition of making art accessible to as many people as possible, creating geographical bridges between creative spaces and fosters a genuine space for international dialogue.

Its former building designed by renowned architect Jean Nouvel and inaugurated in 1994 on Boulevard Raspail, broke all conventions of exhibition making with its architecture of glass and steel. Thirty years later, the Fondation Cartier commissioned to Jean Nouvel a new building set to open on October 25, 2025 at the Place du Palais Royal, in a completely redesigned Haussmann-style building from 1855. Pushing the boundaries of design, the new dynamic architecture, composed of five moving platforms, allows for fully modular spatial configurations and variations in light, multiplying the programmatic and museographic possibilities. It embodies the Fondation’s mission to engage all forms of contemporary creation, open to the broad spectrum of visual arts, photography, cinema, crafts, performance, live performance, and science.
