The Breeder

The Breeder is a contemporary art gallery founded in Athens in 2002 by Stathis Panagoulis and George Vamvakidis. The gallery developed from The Breeder magazine, established in 2000 to encourage artistic dialogue between Athens and the international art world.

Since 2008, the gallery has been based in a former 1970s ice-cream factory renovated by Aris Zambicos Architects. Its programme presents contemporary artistic practices across a range of media, with a focus on work that engages with current cultural, political and social questions.

The gallery also runs the Breeder Open Studio, an initiative that temporarily transforms the exhibition space into a working studio for invited artists. The programme gives visitors the opportunity to encounter works in progress and engage directly with the artists before the space hosts their subsequent solo exhibition.

Alongside its exhibition programme, The Breeder supports emerging artistic communities and has organised charitable initiatives benefiting Athens Pride and Athens-based artists.
