The Approach was founded in 1997 by Jake Miller, along with artists Damien Meade, Ana Genoves and others. One of the gallery’s original aims was to offer solo exhibitions to London-based artists at the beginning of their careers – several of whom have gone on to achieve international success.
The gallery was soon solely run by Jake Miller. Since 1998 the gallery began representing artists and the programme expanded internationally, working with established artists as well as those emerging. The gallery is currently based in its original East End location, above the namesake pub in Old Street, Shoreditch. It continues to expand its programme while also showcasing its stable artists.
