Mitterrand
Galerie Mitterrand was founded in 1988 by Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand and is currently housed in a townhouse in Paris’ Marais district. Initially dedicated to contemporary sculpture, the gallery gradually expanded its programme to include historically significant artists who began producing work from the 1960s onwards.
From its inception, Galerie Mitterrand has served as a vital platform for international artists in France. It has championed the work of Edi Hila, Allan McCollum, Niki de Saint Phalle, Tony Oursler, Anne and Patrick Poirier, among others, while actively collaborating with the estates of Carlos Cruz-Diez, Dennis Oppenheim, Marta Pan, Francisco Sobrino, and Keith Sonnier to offer fresh perspectives on celebrated oeuvres.
The gallery has consistently focused on presenting artworks considered essential to understanding contemporary art. Reflecting the evolving complexity of 21st-century creative practices, its programme has recently embraced a younger and more diverse group of artists, fostering dynamic intergenerational dialogues that explore the multiplicity of experiences in an interconnected yet fractious world.
In 2021, Galerie Mitterrand opened a new chapter in its history by beginning collaborations with artists including Raphaël Zarka and Wallen Mapondera, further extending its commitment to rigorous, thought-provoking contemporary art.
