Monitor

Opened in Rome in 2003

Palazzo Sforza Cesarini, via Sforza Cesarini 43a

From the start, one of its main goals has been to offer an experimental space for a new generation of artists.

The gallery has represented some of the most interesting artists of the decade since their debut. Over the past 11 years Monitor’s artists took part in major exhibitions and shows worldwide. Two of our artists – Nathaniel Mellors and Ursula Mayer have been awarded last year with two prestigious prizes: 2014 Contemporary Art Society Annual Award for Mellors, the Derek Jarman Award for radical film-making for Mayer. Since January 2014 Monitor runs a project space in downtown Manhattan, New York, ended in August 2015 with a residency and a solo show by the young italian artist Tomaso De Luca. Monitor supports italian art in order to provide our artists an international visibility, through collaborations with museums, institutions, curators and collectors in order to realize and promote significant projects.

The gallery continues its talent-scouting. Between 2014 and 2015 the gallery started 2 two new collaborations with Thomas Braida (Gorizia, 1982) and Duane Zaloudek (Texhoma, USA, 1931). A catalogue dedicated to Zaloudek was published in April 2015 on the occasion of the artist’s solo show at Monitor Rome. The catalogue contains an interview to Duane Zaloudek curated by Brett Littmann, Executive Director at Drawing Center. The gallery recently announced the new collaboration with the italian painter Nicola Samorì (Forlì, 1977). In a historical moment in which a huge part of the new generation of artists seems to be mainly devoted on abstract painting, Monitor maintains the continuity with its line, devoting his research and focus on figurative painters, in particular towards the artists that in their practices, offer a reinterpretation in a contemporary of the classical tradition of the european artists of the last century
