Den Frie

Oslo Pl. 1, 2100 København, Denmark

Den Frie is an exhibition space founded in 1891 by the artists’ association Den Frie Udstilling in response to the conservative artistic norms of the time. Inspired by the cooperative movement, Den Frie has provided an important platform for free and experimental art since its inception, challenging the prevailing zeitgeist, supporting groundbreaking developments, and encouraging artists to push the boundaries of how art can be expressed and experienced.

Designed by J.F. Willumsen, the building is a testament to innovation and creativity. Its façade features a striking golden relief of Pegasus with a young man on its back: an enduring symbol of poetic power and artistic inspiration.

With around ten exhibitions each year, Den Frie’s fundamental aim is to present the latest developments in contemporary art. It hosts exhibitions by Danish and international artists, addressing a wide range of current issues. Its extensive programme of exhibitions and events reflects Den Frie’s role as an active platform for contemporary art and artistic production, as well as its commitment to engaging with the world around us.
