Museum of Islamic Art

Off Al Corniche St Doha

Founded in 2008, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) was among the first projects initiated by Qatar Museums. Designed by Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei, the museum is situated on Doha’s Corniche, offering panoramic views of the city’s waterfront. It houses Qatar’s world-class collections of Islamic art, spanning the 7th to the 20th centuries.

In late 2021, the museum underwent a ten-month facilities enhancement project, which included the redesign and reinstallation of its permanent collection galleries. It reopened to the public on 5 October 2022.

MIA’s collection comprises significant examples of Islamic art, including manuscripts, metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, textiles, coins, precious stones, and glass.

The works represent both secular and religious contexts and originate from diverse sources, ranging from the treasure houses of rulers to the homes of ordinary people. The collection encompasses artefacts from three continents, including regions across the Middle East, as well as Spain and China.

Since its opening, MIA has presented a programme of temporary exhibitions that highlight the heritage of Islamic cultures worldwide.

The museum also offers extensive educational programmes for schoolchildren and families, alongside events and activities for audiences of all ages, reinforcing its role as an active cultural institution within the community.
