National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ)
The National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) presents the heritage and culture of Qatar, providing a space where diverse communities can engage with the nation’s past, present, and future. The museum emphasises intergenerational learning through thematic exhibitions, interactive displays, and public programming.
The permanent galleries are underpinned by a digital archive comprising thousands of images, videos, and documents from Qatar and abroad, designed to be accessible to a wide audience. Completed in 2019, the museum building was constructed around the original palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, which served as his family home and the seat of government for 25 years. The palace has been carefully restored and conserved to preserve its historical significance for visitors and future generations.
In addition to the gallery spaces, the building includes a 220-seat auditorium, a research centre and laboratories, and a range of dining options. A landscaped park allows visitors to explore Qatar’s indigenous plants and their cultural significance.
The museum’s collection features archaeological and heritage objects, manuscripts, documents, photographs, jewellery, and costumes, illustrating Qatar’s history and development. These objects are presented within immersive galleries structured around three thematic chapters: Beginnings, Life in Qatar, and Building the Nation.
Through the use of archival material, digital interactivity, educational activities, and sensory experiences—including audio, scents, and tactile models—the museum provides an inclusive and engaging experience for visitors of all ages and levels of familiarity with Qatar’s history.
