Lumen Museum
Lumen, located at the summit of Kronplatz in South Tyrol, is a 1,800 m² museum dedicated to mountain photography. Spanning four floors, it presents the history of the medium from its beginnings to the present, showcasing works by international photographers and combining historical images with digital innovation, temporary exhibitions, and large-scale installations. The programme takes an interdisciplinary approach, exploring mountains through alpinism, tourism, politics, spirituality, and history.
Kronplatz’s development as a tourist destination began in 1871 with the opening of the Villach–Lienz–Franzensfeste railway, attracting mountaineers and later skiers. The cableway inaugurated in 1963 marked a milestone in mountain tourism, followed by the creation of Skirama Kronplatz in 1974 and the world’s first circular gondola lift, “Kronplatz 2000”, in 2000.
Lumen occupies the former mountain station of the original cable car. The museum includes event spaces and the restaurant AlpiNN, where starred chef Norbert Niederkofler serves refined alpine cuisine, offering visitors a full cultural and sensory experience at the heart of the mountains.
