Museo Nacional de Antropologia
The current building of the National Museum of Anthropology was inaugurated on 17 September 1964 and, for over five decades, has fulfilled its mission to research, conserve, exhibit, and promote the country’s most important archaeological and ethnographic collections.
From its inception, this icon of 20th-century urban architecture was designed to be more than just a repository; it was envisioned as a space for reflection on the rich Indigenous heritage of Mexico. Its 22 galleries and over 45,000 square metres of construction make it the largest museum in Mexico and one of the most renowned in the world.
This significant institution houses the archaeological and anthropological testimonies forged by numerous cultural groups over centuries of history. At the same time, it pays tribute to the Indigenous peoples of today’s Mexico through a rich collection that preserves the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, and traditions that constitute the nation’s intangible heritage—a legacy that belongs to all humanity.
