Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU
Founded in 1977, it has grown to achieve official recognition as a major cultural institution of the State of Florida for its unprecedented collection of Latin American and 20th-century American art.
Located on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus of Florida International University, the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum opens in 1977 as a small gallery of under 3,000 square feet and grows into a locally, nationally and internationally recognised cultural institution. Its expansion in the 1980s and 1990s leads to its designation as a Major Cultural Institution by both the State of Florida and Miami-Dade County. In 1999 it receives accreditation from the American Association of Museums, and in 2001 becomes a Smithsonian affiliate.
Renamed the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in 2003, it develops a strong reputation for innovative exhibitions, lectures and educational outreach. Supported by private donors and government agencies, the museum offers free admission to all exhibitions and public events. Since 2008, it occupies a 46,000-square-foot building designed by Yann Weymouth of HOK at the heart of FIU’s Avenue of the Arts.
