Museo Pietà Rondanini
The Museo della Pietà Rondanini is the most recent addition to the historical collections of the Castello Sforzesco.
Established in 2015 based on a design by architect Michele De Lucchi, it was created to house Michelangelo’s last renowned masterpiece in a dedicated space. The sculpture, purchased by the Municipality in 1952, was previously displayed in the Sala degli Scarlioni of the Museum of Ancient Art, set within a niche of pietra serena stone designed by the BBPR studio in 1956.
The chosen location, the Ospedale degli Spagnoli, is a 16th-century space originally used as a resting area for sick soldiers during Spanish rule. It still preserves frescoes from that time. The room also houses other works, such as a bronze head of Michelangelo and a coin featuring the artist’s bust, offering visitors a deeper connection to his figure.
In this new setting, the Ospedale and the Pietà together create an atmosphere of reflection and contemplation, secluded from the bustle of the city.
