Murtas Museum

The Regional Museum of Sardinian Textile Art (MURATS) is a permanent museum of demo-ethno-anthropological heritage established by the Municipality of Samugheo. It is dedicated to the preservation, study, and promotion of Sardinian textile art in all its forms, from its tangible and intangible historical roots to its most innovative contemporary expressions. The museum reflects the identity of Samugheo, a centre of excellence in the Mandrolisai region, where textile production remains a defining historical, economic, social, and cultural legacy. MURATS officially opened on 14 September 2002 and, since 2022, has formed part of the Allai–Samugheo Museum System alongside the Civic Museum of Allai (CiMA).

The museum is housed in a purpose-built facility at the entrance to the village, designed specifically to meet museum standards. Spanning approximately 750 square metres over two levels, it includes exhibition galleries, an education workshop, a library, a conference hall, and a bookshop. The building is surrounded by landscaped grounds planted with native Mediterranean vegetation, providing a fitting setting for Pietra Sonora by Pinuccio Sciola, a sculpture donated by the artist to the museum.
