Museo Nivola

The Nivola Museum in Orani, in the province of Nuoro, is dedicated to the life and work of Costantino Nivola (Orani, 1911 – East Hampton, 1988). Managed by the Fondazione Nivola, it was established in 1995, a few years after the artist's death, with the aim of preserving, promoting, and advancing the understanding of his work and legacy.

Over the years, the museum has presented projects focusing on Nivola's practice and on contemporaries whose paths intersected with his, alongside exhibitions and artists' residencies that explore contemporary artistic languages while maintaining thoughtful and meaningful connections with his intellectual and artistic legacy.

The museum is housed in a complex of three main buildings arranged along the hillside overlooking the village, near the Su Càntaru spring. The architectural masterplan was designed by Peter Chermayeff and subsequently developed by Gianfranco Crisci and Alessandro Floris. Conceived both as a monographic museum and as a dynamic centre for research and experimentation, where art, architecture, nature, and landscape exist in dialogue, it plays a vital role in the study of Nivola's work while also serving an important civic function by engaging local communities through programmes that, in keeping with the artist's vision, encourage participation and activate public space.

The permanent collection, displayed on a rotating basis, comprises hundreds of sculptures, paintings, drawings, and numerous examples of Nivola's celebrated sandcasts. Together, they document every stage of his artistic research and multidisciplinary experimentation, which marked a significant chapter in modern explorations of the relationship between sculpture, environment, and architectural design. Through its ongoing programme of exhibitions, research, and public initiatives, the Nivola Museum fosters cultural development while sustaining the history and collective memory of the surrounding region.
