Serpentine displays contemporary art across two sites in Kensington Gardens: Serpentine North and Serpentine South. Each site hosts about three exhibitions per year, showing art, design, architecture, performance, and community projects.
Serpentine North opened in 2013. Artists including James Barnor, P. Staff, Rose Wylie and Etel Adnan have all exhibited at the gallery. It comprises two parts: a classical 19th-century brick structure and its 21st-century extension. The 19th-century building served as a gunpowder store until the early 1960s, after which it was used by the park for storage before being converted into a gallery. Inside, two barrel-vaulted former gunpowder stores are now used as exhibition spaces. Designed by Zaha Hadid, the extension is a light-filled, open social space housing the gallery’s restaurant.
