Fermata: Hong Kong in Venice
The Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) jointly present “Fermata: Hong Kong in Venice” as a Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by the HKMoA, the exhibition explores the poetic rhythms of everyday life and familiar yet fleeting moments from Hong Kong’s cultural context. It engages in a dialogue with the Biennale’s theme “In Minor Keys” through a journey of self-discovery.
The exhibition features selected works by Kingsley Ng and Angel Hui, who reinterpret daily-life aesthetics using varied mediums such as light, sound, and installation. Ng, an established media artist, creates site-specific installations that extend perceptions of life, while Hui integrates traditional Chinese cultural elements with contemporary artistic language by recreating everyday objects. As observers of urban nuances, the artists transform their reflections into creative inspirations that connect the international metropolises of Hong Kong and Venice.
The selection of artists followed a nomination process involving over 200 candidates from local tertiary institutions and professional art organisations. This collaboration marks the first time the HKMoA and HKADC have partnered for the Biennale, aiming to showcase the diversity and vitality of Hong Kong’s contemporary art on a global stage.
