Lee Ufan
Dia Art Foundation presents a solo exhibition of work by Lee Ufan at SMAC Venice (San Marco Art Centre) as an official Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by Jessica Morgan, the presentation traces the evolution of the artist’s visual language through works spanning seven decades, including historical and new paintings, large-scale installations, and a new site-specific commission.
Staged across eight galleries at the Procuratie in Piazza San Marco, the display reflects the artist’s dialogue with architectural space and his commitment to creating environments that prompt reflection. Lee Ufan is a prominent figure of the Japanese Mono-ha (School of Things) and the Korean Dansaekhwa (Monochromatic Paintings) movements. His practice explores the representation of space and time through painterly gestures, focusing on themes of interval, balance, and spatial tension. The exhibition marks the most significant presentation of the artist’s work in Italy to date and coincides with a concurrent display of his paintings and sculptures at Dia Beacon in New York, collectively celebrating the artist’s 90th birthday.
